Love has been the pulse of Hindi
cinema since its inception.
Celebrating love in Bollywood
style is unique and is revered all
around the world. Beautiful
backdrops, vivacious song and
dance and emotion drenched
dialogues have been the ‘apple of
the eye’ for the Bolly industry.
Romantic films like Raj Kapoor’s
‘Awaara’ and Guru Dutt’s ‘Kaagaz
ke Phool’ laid the stepping stones
in the black and white era that
was followed through decades
by films and film makers. The
canvas of Hindi films seems
incomplete without the color of
romance!
5. Maine Pyar Kiya
Among the five evergreen movies
that have instilled the audience
to ‘fall in love’, the fifth position
goes to Sooraj Barjatiya’s
romantic flick ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’
that rocked the nation in 1989.
Not only did it set the launch pad
for Salman Khan but also encrypt
itself into memories of romance
that is almost unforgettable. The
young duo of Prem and Suman
(played by Salman and
Bhagyasree) and their struggle
for a happy reunion allured
teenagers all across the country.
The film received many acclaims
including a Filmfare for Best film
and Best Music.
4. Kaagaz ke Phool
The fourth position is held by
Guru Dutt ’s love saga ‘Kaagaz ke
Phool’ that is rumoured to
portray Dutt’s increasing distance
with his wife singer Geeta Dutt
that was initiated by his alluring
affection for Waheeda Rahman.
The film is an epic and was
ranked at 160 among greatest
films of all times. The film has
memorable music by legend S D
Burman and artists like Geeta
Dutt and Mohammad Rafi had
lent their vocals for the songs.
3. Devdas
The third position goes to
‘ Devdas’ that is based on a novel
by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
The plot of the film revolves
around the rich Devdas and the
poor Parvati. How societal taboos
set the lovers apart and ruined
their lives forever is what the
story is all about. The film has
been made in different Indian
languages so far. Though the
first filmy version of Devdas was
made in 1927, the Dilip Kumar
starrer of 1955 still tops the
chart. Bengali actress Suchitra
Sen played the role of Paro while
the role of courtesan
Chandramukhi was enacted by
Vyjantimala. Devdas has
managed to sway the audience
with emotions every time the film
has hit the silver screen.
2. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le
Jaayenge
The Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer
‘ Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge’ or
popularly known as DDLJ is on
position two. Raj and Simran
managed to break all records at
the box office as they toured all
across Europe spinning a love
story that has captured minds
forever. Yash Chopra’s son Aditya
Chopra debuted as a director
with DDLJ in 1995. The film
bagged 10 awards that year
including a National award for
the most popular film of the year.
A movie hall in Mumbai is still
holding shows of DDLJ…….what
more does the film need to be a
star!
1. Mughal-e-Azam
The film that has topped charts
forever since it was made is
K.Asif ’s ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ that was
released in 1960 for the first
time. The epic love story between
Prince Salim (played by Dilip
Kumar) and a court dancer
Anarkali (played by Madhubala)
has been an inspiration for
lovers through time. It not only
broke innumerable records in
terms of lavish technology and
art used in the film but also for
its brilliant music and songs that
are hummed till today. The
brilliantly scripted dialogues of
the film were awarded with
Filmfare that year. Naushad ’s
‘Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya’ became
the anthem for lovers all across
the globe.
Bollywood’s celebration of love
and romance is eternal and
continues till today ……..not only
with every new film that is
made ……but essentially in every
movie lover’s heart!
